Spiritual love versus romantic love
When reading about twin flames and soulmates on the internet it is difficult to get clarity of what exactly the differences are. Often the same kind of process is described, I didn't get clear what the core distinction was. Both are trendy terms at the moment and it all sounds very romantic. Time for some clarity.

The similarities
The reason twin flames and soulmates are often mixed up is because they both start out very romantic. With both, there can be a sense of coming home. The feeling that you have known each other for much longer.
Another similarity is that there is a personal development process going on. But the way that happens is different with soulmates than with twin flames.
Soulmates support each other, help each other along. With twin flames this process is completely different. You do this alone and the reason why is getting clear in my post 'the scientific approach to twin flames'.
With twin flames there is always a period of separation. This can also happen with soulmates. But the big difference with soulmates is, it is a logical consequence of certain choices they make or as a result of the situation.
With twin flames it often doesn't make any sense why the separation is happening. There is usually no logical explanation. The other person withdraws for no plausible reason.
And a soulmate may disappear from your life altogether, but your twin flame will keep coming back.
First, let's look at what is fundamentally different between twin flames and soulmates:
The differences between twin flames and soulmates
To read this blog properly, it is helpful first to read the blog "the scientific approach to twin flames." There's described exactly what twin flames are and why the things that happen between twin flames take place.
The first and essential difference between twin flames and soulmates is that twin flames are one soul (so they are not connected, they are one), and soulmates are two souls that have a connection with each other. You could compare soulmates with 2 magnets (2 separate self-contained systems) that attract each other. boom, they're stuck. These are also often very strong, intense encounters/relationships.
Soulmates, Two souls who have a connection. they attract each other.
Twin flames have no connection. They are 1 soul, 1 system and polarized in the mind.
The energy goes from the positive pole to the negative pole.
One soul
Twin flames are one soul incarnated in two bodies. So you are 1 system together. You do not have a connection with your twin flame. You ARE your twin flame. Almost everyone keeps writing about a connection. And yes, it feels like that in the beginning, but by the time the illusion of separateness falls away you realize and experience that you are the "other" as well. So my 'other self' would be a good term as well. You are that in another body.
And no, you don't have the same personality, memories and life experience (because that all comes from the mind/ego). Your soul has a different earthly experience through this other incarnation. But you are the same soul. Your consciousness is exactly the same. And as you can let go of your ego and start living more from the soul, this is exactly what you will experience. You knów that you are the other as well (and I am not talking about understanding from the mind, but inner knowing from the soul).
The point is that the mind cannot understand this. I have been crying like a child and shouting; I don't understand, I don't understand. The mind is very frustrated about this. It wants to understand, structure, order etc. And for this part surrender and acceptance is needed. The soul is acceptance, non-resistance. The soul says: this is how it is! Without understanding, without judgment, without label. As long as you keep approaching your twin flame through the mind, you keep seeing the other physical person as someone else and keep pushing the other away through your energy. You the chaser, the other the runner.
You are not separated from this person. Only physically, and that is exactly where we are looking at (our attention/energy is goes outside instead of inside) and that's the reason why we experience separation. Being separated is an illusion. I didn't even believe in reincarnation, yet I can feel I am one with this person. whether it exists or not, it doesn't even matter to me. We are one soul, that's just what I know and what I experience.
And when I talk about experiencing. I am talking about a deep 'inner knowing', that is the soul.You can also 'know' things with your mind. That is a different kind of knowing. That is knowing in the sense of understanding.
Romantic love
Another big difference between soulmates and twin flames is: that soulmates have a romantic love, often very intense. They attract each other like two magnets :-) The real butterfly love. Deep, intense, passionate, romantic, a deep sense of connection. This love is based on duality. There is a lot of love, but it is conditional. You expect reciprocity in the contact at some point.
In this connection you can have deep conversations about life. You feel connected and there is a sense of togetherness at the level of the soul as well as emotionally. And this emotional bonding also creates a deep physical intimacy and making you feel connected at all levels. In addition, you often share the same standards, values and goals in life. You feel resonance on all layers, which makes these connections very strong. Energy goes back and forth, this can also be on a metaphysical level (such as telepathy),
Spiritual love
It's not romantic love between twin flames. This is spiritual love (the unconditional love of the soul), although it does begin as romantic love. It is love of the soul, love that is eternal and has no conditions. When you have energetically made the shift into your consciousness, you no longer have a preference of what your twin flame is doing. Whether he is with you or not. At first I couldn't believe this. It was incomprehensible that I would ever feel it this way. And yet it is true. There is no fear of losing, no arguments, no emotional intensity. No butterfly love! But inner peace and zen.
It feels as the soul. And it feels like you are by yourself, but the other is there too. Your other self. Exactly like the picture below. One consciousness, divided into two bodies. Polarized in the bodies and fully 1 in consciousness.
When you put labels or have expectations towards your twin flame, they're gone. It's 100% soulstuff with your twin flame. No deep conversations, no discussions, no agreements. It is BEING.
I also read different things about whether you can have more twin flames. But you can only have one twin flame!
You can have more soulmates or karmics (as far as that's a thing). But no matter what.. beside your twin flame every other soul is just another soul. That you have a stronger connection with one than the other. Yes you do. But only your twin flame is you, your soul. And the rest is 'just everybody else'.
So why you have a "normal" connection with some people and a soulmate-connection with others? This has to do with the vibration of your soul. Each soul has its own vibration. The souls that are very close to your own vibration and perhaps also those we recognize from past lives, we feel more connected to. We feel that we are on the same level/frequency. And because the soul vibration is very close together, you are also much more attuned to each other than in a "normal" connection. We feel at home with each other, we have the same vision on life, the same ideas about a relationship. The same standard values etc.
